Additional evidence for increased nbcS2 mRNA stability was also found in mature green fruits, where rbcS1 and rbcS2 transcriptional activities have declined between sixfold and eightfold, but nbcS2 mRNA levels have only declined approximately twofold, for instance, provera. Rates of anticoagulation were often not controlled between the two treatment arms in many of the studies. For example, in one study121 anticoagulation was mandatory in the rate-control treatment arm, but in the rhythm-control arm continuous anticoagulation was encouraged but could be stopped at the physician's discretion if sinus rhythm had apparently been maintained for at least 4 and preferably 12 ; consecutive weeks. Anticoagulation therapy use may have had some effect on the outcome of the study, and in a subsequent post hoc analysis, 127 the use of anticoagulation therapy was an independent predictor of survival. Although one study121 reported a higher incidence of adverse pulmonary events associated with rhythm control, it was not reported whether this was due to the particular choice of rhythmcontrol drug used rather than the strategy itself. The health economic evidence concluded that a rate-control strategy was more cost-effective than a rhythm-control strategy. However, it was unclear whether the UK setting and outcome costs of inadequate anticoagulation would affect the results.

Research Activities Over the past year the Division has continued to witness exciting discoveries, promising new research and national and international recognition for its basic and clinical research work. Our 13 research scientists and surgeon-scientists have expertise ranging from molecular biology to psycho-social research, pharmacokinetics, cell-signaling, erectile dysfunction, laser energy, infrared diagnostics and physics. The Division is developing specialized areas of interest in biophotonics and robotic surgery. One of the most exciting events of 2004 was the announcement that the Canada Foundation for Innovation awarded the Prostate Centre a grant of $7.6 million for development of PC-TRIADD: The Prostate Centre's Translational Research Initiative for Accelerated Discovery and Development. This project involves an outstanding team of scientists and clinicians, lead by Drs. Martin Gleave and Colleen Nelson, who will use the most sophisticated state of the art tools in a series of projects that are geared towards understanding the molecular and genetics mechanisms responsible for prostate disease and, ultimately, use that information to develop therapies for improved treatments. The grant will provide 40% of the funding necessary for this program, which totals $19.8 million with a balance coming from the BC Knowledge Development Fund, industrial partners and private donors. Also in 2004, the Michael Smith Foundation awarded us a total of $1, 000, 000 dollars for salary support as an adjunct to the CFI grant. Drs. Gleave and Nelson followed up this great achievement with another grant success of $19.2 million though the Research Hospital Fund. This funding will build an addition on to the Jack Bell Research Centre and allow further expansion of our programs. The Division is raising additional funds to incorporate members of all of its research teams into this medical research facility. In the Bladder Care Centre, Dr. Lynn Stothers has also had exciting success with her research. She has received over $1.5 million in research funds to study cranberries in the prevention and treatment of bladder disorders. She has developed non-invasive new technologies to study the bladder which are now held in patent through the UILO office. Dr. Joel Teichman continues to move forward in a determined manner to develop a multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary biophotonics unit at Providence Health Care. As regards the efficacy of a specific traditional Chinese herbal medicine in dementia, Dutch researchers examined the efficacy of Ginkgo special extract EGB 761 in people with dementia or age-related memory impairment, using a 24-week, mulitcentre RCT van Dongen et al, 2003 ; . The 214 participants were recruited from 39 homes for older people in the Netherlands, and were randomly allocated to receive Gingko or a placebo for twelve weeks, followed by randomisation to continue the treatment or receive a placebo. A total of 123 older people completed the 24-week trial. As the authors found no statistically significant differences between the treatment and control groups, they suggested that their trial results did not indicate any benefit for the use of Ginkgo in people with dementia or age-associated memory impairment and lamivudine.

Erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase G6PD ; deficiency was first described in 1956 by Carson, Flanagan, Ickes and Alving during investigations into the cause of acute intravascular haemolysis following the administration of the antimalarial drug, primaquine. This defect was found to occur in 10% of apparently healthy American Negro males. Since then this deficiency has been found in many ethnic groups, the incidence varying from 58% in Sephardic Jews, 4 to 30% in Mediterranean races to less than 1% in Caucasians of North European origin. In Chinese, the incidence depends on the place of origin and varies from 0.29 to 5.47% Lee, Shih, Huang, Lin, Blackwell, Blackwell and Hsia, 1963 ; and was found to be 5.5% in adult southern Chinese males in Hong Kong Chan, Todd and Wong, 1964 ; . G6PD is the entry enzyme in the pentose phosphate pathway for the metabolism of glucose, the only substrate used by the red cell. The important function is to generate reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate NADPH ; which in turn maintains glutathione in the reduced state GSH ; .
